Help Bring the Fun Into the Community

Building a strong community can be achieved through successful community building activities. When we come together to have fun, celebrate and support one another, our community flourishes.

Here's What We Need, or Just Need to Keep, in North Smithfield

  • Place for our senior citizens to meet and socialize
  • New skatepark or outdoor facility
  • Meeting space for non profits
  • Meeting space for clubs and organizations
  • After school programs for middle school kids
  • Media center with large screen TV, DVD player and cable TV
  • Computer center with computers, printers, software and scanners
  • Computer classes for people out of work and seniors
  • Advanced computer classes for people looking to advance professionally
  • Community outings
  • Story hour and activities for toddlers and young children
  • Day camp for kids during the summer
  • Dances and fun stuff to do at night for the older kids

The Simple Solution - a Community Center

Many people have spoken about a community center over the years but the time is now to develop this long range plan.

A good community center would be large enough to include:

  • One or two small meeting or conference rooms
  • Children's activity area
  • Computer lab with at least 20 computers
  • Pool tables or other table game activities
  • Board games and card games
  • Media room with big screen TV, cable and DVD player and enough seats for 30 or more people
  • Common area for dances and social activities
  • Reading room with latest, most popular book releases and multiple copies of some of the books from the school's summer reading program
  • Kitchen area with enough room to prep food and beverages

With this initiative, we are looking to raise enough funds to build or renovate an existing facility, for a community center. This area will likely be our most agressive project and will be set up as an endowment because it may take several years to raise the funds needed to see this to fruition.

Our goal is to work with existing organizations to develop a solution that will collectively benefit all interested parties.

We need dedicated individuals to commit to seeing this project through to fruition, to do the research, determine the feasibility, do a funding and needs analysis and determine the best course of action to develop this project here in North Smithfield.

Should the group determine that the community center is not a feasible project, then the funds will go towards other community-wide initiatives such as bringing a more advanced computer lab to the library, providing computer classes to the elderly and other members of the community, a recycling program to distribute old but usable computers to families in need, concerts and dances for the kids to be held at local restaurants in town, and other social events and activities for the people of our town.
